Holidays in Lisbon: where to stay
Most of Lisbon’s hotels are concentrated in a relatively small area, mainly between Comércio Square and the statue of Marquês de Pombal (where the Marques de Pombal metro station is located). This « concentration » of hotels makes it much easier to choose accommodation and possible guided tours of Lisbon since many tourist attractions are nearby. My favorite region for accommodation is the area around the Baixa-Chiado, Rossio and Restauradores metro stations.
The city centre of Lisbon and Chiado is one of the oldest and most historic places in the city. There are small stone streets (many with limited car access), buildings of ancient architecture of a few floors and tourist attractions such as the Arco da Rua Augusta, the Chiado warehouses and the Elevador de Santa Justa (which leads to the upper city). It is an excellent area for walking where the old buildings contrast with the dozens of contemporary shops on the streets! A charming place by day and by night and an excellent choice for those who have little time and want a central place to visit Lisbon! Bairro Alto is right next to this area and is excellent for enjoying the nightlife. If you choose to stay in this area, it is better to visit it on foot. Lisbon is not a dangerous city and you can walk its streets at any time of the day or night. On the other side of the Bairro Alto is Alfama, which is also the historic centre of Lisbon but with a smaller number of hotels and many coasts.
The Praça do Rossio (officially Praça Pedro IV), well known in the city, is another excellent area to book your hotel in Lisbon. There are many things you can do on foot. The Rossio station and the National Theatre are located on this square. In its surroundings, there are restaurants, cafés and shops. By staying close to this square, you will be very well located and can easily use the tram services of the Portuguese capital.
A little further north of the Tagus is Liberdade Avenue, which is one of the main avenues in Lisbon. Along the road are hotels, theatres, popular shops and other famous brands. Along the Avenida, there are three stations: at the nearest point to the historic area is the Restauradores station, in the middle the Avenida station and on the most modern section the Marquês de Pombal station (which is an ideal area for those seeking larger hotels).
Even further north is the Avenidas Novas area with more modern hotels that are often sought after by business travellers. It is an area closer to Lisbon airport and the El Corte Inglês store (which is in fact practically a shopping centre because it is so big). This area of Lisbon has wide avenues, modern buildings, more spacious hotels with parking facilities.
In addition, for those in Lisbon who are only passing through during a connection, it is possible to stay close to Lisbon airport, which is about 8 km from the city centre (Baixa-Chiado). The airport is close to the Oceanarium and Oriente station, from where trains leave for Porto and other European cities.
